Farming

When I was young, it was a tradition, for the men and boys to bring in the hay at the end of summer. To help with any of jobs which the village farm needed labour to complete. We loved it, the reward being a feast for dinner, at the farm house.

Farming then was a community affair, from helping with labour to buying the vegetables, eggs and milk it produced. Today farming is stressful. Many farms make no money just trying to supply food. If we could overlook convenience and buy from farmers, they would make a living and we would understand more about God’s creation around us.

2 Timothy 2:6 says ‘The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops.’ (NIV) If you can’t buy from a local farm, at least pray for them. Without farmers, we wouldn’t live the way we do.

Action Point

Farmers have one of the highest suicide rates in the country. Why not get a group of friends together and see if you can volunteer at a local farm.
