Respecting Our Elders

Updated: Feb 11

There is an interesting scripture in 1 Timothy 5:1-2 which says Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.’ (ESV)

Someone once said, ‘never judge a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes’. Why is it, younger people often never ask older people for advice much these days. The life experience of anyone older is so valuable. They have often seen and done things which a younger person might not have even considered.

When I see an older person in ministry than I am, I make sure to ask them to pray for me and give me any advice they can - I’m 53 this year. The best advice is usually, consider time and do things which are long lasting, not short lived. I love that.

Quote

Do things that are long lasting, not short lived.

Prayer

Lord, help me consider and learn from the wisdom of those around me. Amen.

Action Point

Most of us know someone who has known Jesus for much longer than ourselves… speak to them and try to learn about what God has taught them over the years.
