Grudges

Updated: Feb 20

Grudges, the persistent harbouring of resentment towards someone for past grievances, can be insidiously destructive. They poison our hearts, making us prisoners of our bitterness and eroding the fabric of relationships, often beyond repair.

Ephesians 4:31-32 (ESV) says, "Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." This passage identifies the destructive nature of grudges and provides the antidote—forgiveness, kindness, and a tender heart.

Overcoming grudges requires a conscious decision to forgive, motivated by the example of Christ's forgiveness towards us. Prayer, reflection on Scripture, and seeking God's grace enable us to extend forgiveness, just as we have been forgiven. Doing so frees us from past grievances; in the end, what does a grudge benefit you? Its benefit to you is nothing.

Quote

Grudges steal your time, increase your anger and distract you from God.

Prayer

Lord, help me let go of the hurts of the past to embrace your promise of the future. Amen.

Action Point

Pray and forgive those who have hurt you so you can move on in life.
