Making a difference, one devotional at a time

00373 - Becoming What You Want to Be
There is an irony in breaking free from difficult past circumstances. In a weird way, because we don’t know the future, our instinct can deceive us into thinking that past difficulty is normal and that we should accept them. Making decisions that will lead to big changes for a better life takes guts. If you are sure, you should be determined to follow through. Romans 8:37 says, ‘Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.’ (NKJV) In Christ, w

00372 - Prodigal Son
We all meet Christians whose son or daughter is away from the Lord. Even worse, some might have fallen out of contact with their parents. It’s often heartbreaking to witness that in the family of others, even more, difficult if it is your child. When we pray, there is always an intervention from God. Perhaps not how we would like it, but there will always be an outcome. Luke 15:18-20 says, ‘I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against

00371 - The Concerns Of The World
With the events in the world, it’s right to say we are in the end times. 2 Timothy 3:1-4 says, ‘There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.’ (NIV) We live in the knowledge that w

00370 - The Light Within
John 12:35-36 says, ‘Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.” When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.’ (NIV) Jesus was, of course, referencing Himself as ‘the light’. He is, after all the light o

00369 - Regrets Of The Words Unsaid
When you are angry, tired or withdrawn, behaviour changes to reflect your mood. You might no longer say thank you, take time to say please. You might be dismissive or snap at the people around you. It might be days later when you sit alone with a memory of regret from things unsaid. Hebrews 10:22 says, ‘let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience…’ (NIV) Even if

00368 - Good Sleep
Waking up refreshed in the morning feels great. Not having a good night's sleep can make the day quite challenging. Forty per cent of people are sleep deprived, and one in 5 can’t get to sleep even when they try. You can, of course, do what sleep scientists suggest. Wind down, no devices before bed, keep cool at night, don’t drink alcohol before sleep etc. John 14:27 says, ‘Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your h

00367 - Thieves Don’t Break into Empty Houses
Any kind of burglary can be devastating for the homeowner. Thieves will often have done their homework before even attempting to steal from you. Time’s when you are absent, waiting and watching to see if you are going on holiday. Then they do their work. Imagine if our heart was a home? Would there be anything of value there for the enemy to try and rob us? To discourage us in our walk with God. Psalm 138:7 says, ‘Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life. Y

00366 - Colours of Dawn
Being an early bird, I witness the wonder of dawn most days of summer. The sun rises, encouraging the birds to chatter, and then the spectacle of colours chasing each other across the sky begins. The variability is incredible, some times it’s all kinds of blues, pale blue, cerulean, azure, and then onto sky blue itself. On other days you see a dance of orange, salmon, coral and red. It always takes my breath away, I could watch it for hours, but sadly it only lasts for minute

00365 - J-E-S-U-S
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creatures. He is the light of the world. He has all authority. He defeated sin and hell. He is the way, the truth, the life. He was born to an earthy mother and sits at the right hand of our Heavenly Father. Jesus was the Lamb of God and the Lion of the tribe of Judah. He forgave sin, He healed the sick; He corrected wickedness and defied human convention. The cattle on a thousand hills are His. He never promised ear

00364 - The Altar Of Pointless
The definition of pointless is to do something ‘having little or no sense, use or purpose’. Similar to stupid ‘doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result’. You may be doing something which will never have a useful outcome, so question whether it’s time to let that thing go. 1 Corinthians 10:23 says, ‘I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial…..’ (NIV) Don’t expend your life on the altar of pointless. Don’t be stubborn, e

What is AI and how it might affect you
We are on the cusp of the biggest change the world has ever seen. You might think Brexit was disruptive, the war in Ukraine is disruptive, or covid was disruptive. AI (Artificial Intelligence) will bring more change than all of those put together. For ten years now, companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple, Meta, Amazon, Tesla and IBM, have been developing software which learns how to improve, thereby giving the company a competitive advantage. Capitalism is funding AI, and no

00363 - Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
Below is a link to a version of Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus, written by Helen Howarth Lemmel in 1882. It was originally called ‘The Heavenly Vision’. News Boys, Hillsong and Michael W Smith have all done their own versions of this song. If you’ve ever had a moment at a conference when the music stopped and one song was sung, it is probably this one. Psalm 123:1 simply says, ‘O God enthroned in heaven, I lift my eyes to you.’ (TLB) When we lift our gaze above the haze of life, w

00362 - The John Wesley Manifesto
When you consider that the list below was written around 250 years ago, it’s amazing how relevant it is for today. Wesley, the great Methodist reformer, wrote these points (summarised) for a better world. 1) Reduce the gap between rich and poor. 2) Help everyone find a job. 3) Introduce a living wage. 4) Offer the best education possible. 5) Help people feel they can make a difference. 6) Promote Tolerance. 7) Equal Treatment for Women. 8) Build a Society based on Values, not

00361 - Being A Living Sacrifice
Societies’ definition of success is to get rich and powerful with a touch of celebrity. The Kingdom of God is the opposite of that. The idea of service and sacrifice is not new, Jesus modelled it throughout His life on earth. People have given their lives into service in convents and monasteries. Yet the idea of service and sacrifice is not widespread today. Galatians 6:2 says, ‘Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.’ (NIV) There is no

00360 - Flow In Your Anointing
It’s said that when a person is anointed, they express outwardly what God has chosen and set apart that person for a specific holy purpose. Someone might be anointed to teach, and whatever they say makes so much sense to whoever hears. Someone might be anointed to heal, and there is evidence that a good percentage of the people they pray for are healed. Isaiah 61:1 says, ‘The Lord God has put his Spirit in me because the Lord has appointed me to tell the good news to the poor

00359 - Let Faith Arise
It might be the best time to ‘Let Faith Arise’ when you feel at the bottom of life's barrel. Leaving your faith run riot in the circumstance your faith asks God to intervene in a way that you can’t do on your own. Faith is the currency of miracles. Hebrews 11:6 says, ‘You can never please God without faith, without depending on him. Anyone who wants to come to God must believe that there is a God and that he rewards those who sincerely look for him’ (TLB) Everyone faces somet

00358 - The Birth Of The Church
Pentecost is the birth of the Church. In flames of fire, the Holy Spirit descended on disciples after Jesus’ ascension. It happened on the 7th Sunday (50th day) after the resurrection on Easter Sunday. Acts 2:1-3 says, ‘When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to

00357 - Life Insurance
Many households are insured for every eventuality. It is right to ensure our house is safe; our family could live well if we were suddenly taken. It’s a legal requirement to have car insurance etc. Consider what insurance will give your husband or wife and your children. Insurance is a stepping stone to conveying money to the ones you love and the coming generation. That’s all. Hebrews 13:5 says, ‘Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for

00356 - Overcoming Fear
Fear is one of the biggest challenges to our Christian walk. When in the mindset of fear, faith must arise. It’s been said that fear means (F)alse (E)vidence (A)ppearing (R)eal. Fear is the cancer of the soul. Fear paralysis us into the abyss of surrender. We must not give in to it. Deuteronomy 31:6 says, ‘Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.’ (ESV) Let faith arise. S

00355 - Being Ahead Of The Curve
My grandfather always said to me, ‘Go the extra mile’. Absolutely do what you say, do it on time, and if you can’t do something, be honest about why. Most people are busy with work or their daily routine. Our diligence in doing things well is rewarding, but nothing quite like doing one or two other things to get us ahead of the curve for tomorrow. There is something about that which is so satisfying. Proverbs 21:5 says, ‘The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but
