00152 - Hope Stabilises The Soul
If you are feeling down and a little bit depressed, perhaps it’s time to spend half an hour to encourage yourself. You might decide to reflect on those times God did come through for you, a significant past time with God, those seasons when He seemed so close. Why not treat yourself to the memories of God having already working in your life. If He, did it then, He, can do it again. Psalm 39:7 says ‘But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you’. (NIV) In the middle o

00151 - Rock Of Ages
This song, written in 1763 by Anglican cleric, Augustus Toplady, used to be a staple hymn in the Anglican Communion. There is a myth that Toplady was inspired to write this hymn after he took shelter from a storm in Burrington Combe in the Mendips of England. However, it was written, it is a hymn sung across the English speak world for hundreds of years. Psalm 18:2 says ‘The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer...’. (NIV) Also says my refuge, shield, horn, strongh

00150 - Honouring The Influencers - Len Sparks
In the small village of Clyne, Len Sparks was the minister of a tiny Church in the valley’s of South Wales. He never cared much for fame or fortune, carrying out his duties earning only a stipend, yet giving himself to the people. Many families saw Len as the fourth emergency service, and when life happened and they had need, they phoned him and he was there. Len’s life was routed in the Bible, He could often be heard quoting chapters of scripture from memory and had a script

00149 - Don’t Be Afraid Of Halloween
Halloween was originally an ancient Celtic festival called Samain. Pope Gregory III in the eighth century designated November 1st as all saint’s day, making the day before All Hallows Eve, which became Halloween. Media got its hands on it and expanded it into trick or treat. Families dress their kids up and go seeking sweets around their Neighbours. Mostly they have no idea of the origins of this night. There is no doubt however covens are very active in this period. We sho

00148 - What Moves You ?
It might be music, prayer, empathy when seeing someone in need. It be poetry, pro’s or a good film. We are creative, emotional men and women, made in the image of God. Never think of emotion as a weakness, in God’s Kingdom it’s more commonly known as a strength. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says ‘When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same anymore. A new life has begun!’. (TLB) It’s no wonder then, through the lens of Christ we see the wor

00147 - A Heart Of Gratitude
We raise our children with a simple rule, ‘We love you when you are happy, we love you when you are sad, we love you when you are naughty, and we love you when you are good’. There’s been many times when Psalm 107:1 comes to mind when going through this method with our children. ‘Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever’. (NIV) We thank God for our kids, we will live on through them and their families, when the time comes. The scripture in Psalms r

00146 - Bring Your Past To The Altar
Many people get completely disabled when they become Christians because they doubt God’s forgiveness of their past. The bad past can become like a ball and chain, constantly reminding, like a whispering devil, ‘you won’t make it, you are not worthy’. Yet Psalm 103:12 says ‘as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us’. (NIV) Jesus never died on the cross to do half a job, to give you hope and still allow the devil to cause doubt or

00145 - When Was Your Last Tantrum ?
When a young child of two or three doesn’t get their own way, their temper often results in a tantrum. That relatively impulse description for behaviour getting out of hand. Colossians 4:5-6 says ‘…Let you conversation be full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone’. (NIV) Life gives us every opportunity to act badly or well, most of the time it’s down to our choice. There may be days where circumstance or frustration drives our behaviour,

00144 - Are You Spread Too Thin ?
More and more people are finding themselves having to do other things to make ends meet, crafting selling stuff through Facebook or Ebay. However, the price we often pay in doing that is tiredness and distraction from our key focus. It might be better to pray and work on improving your main income stream rather than have lots of peripheral bits of income, which you must spend time, to keep everyone happy. Proverbs 4:25 says ‘Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze

00143 - Your Job Can Be Your Mission Field
Acts 13:47 says, ‘I have made you a light for the gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth’. (NIV). Most believers will never go abroad on a mission trip, and yet there is a mission field right under our nose that we don’t often see, our workplace! Work puts us together with all sorts of people. Our role is to be Jesus amongst them. Your action may be a kind word, it may be a prayer, it may be advice, it may be sharing to them who Jesus is. You can’t

00142 - Why Do The Clocks Go Back ?
In 1916, during the first world war, the government installed a mandate of turning the clocks back coming into the winter and forward as we come into the summer. This was primarily to give more light in the evening and therefore to save energy due to the circumstance of the time. There are some people that feel moving the clocks back and then forward again is now irrelevant, for this devotional we’ll not debate that. Matthew 6:34 says ‘..do not worry about tomorrow, for tomo

00141 - Finding Joy
James 1:2-3 says, ‘Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance’. (NIV) Joy is sometimes a visitor in life, not always a lifestyle in the way we live or walk out each day. Having a Joyful heart, brings a smile to the face, a soft answer in a heated conversation and the patience to see something through. Before Joy is a way of life it’s a choice. We need to train

00140 - Reaching My Family For Jesus
The salvation of our immediate and wider family is an ache in the heart. The thought of any unsaved family member is tough to bear and how to approach the subject of salvation with them can often be a real quandary, if they reject the suggestion, are they also rejecting you as a family member? Acts 16:31 says ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved-you and your household’ (NIV). If we took this scripture to heart, God is already on our side, there is a promise her

00139 - The Prayer Of Faith
Faith is when you exercise belief that God will come through before the circumstances change. It’s impossible to get to a place of faith without spending some time going deeper in prayer, and in perseverance to see the issue through to breakthrough. Matthew 21:22 says ‘And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.’ (ESV) There are obviously times when God doesn’t answer our prayers the way we want, we often feel those moments are unfair. Yet in day-to

00138 - So Much Wisdom In Proverbs
Solomon was known to be wise, and when you think of what he wrote in Proverbs, it proves just that. It’s the one book in the bible that is packed full of interesting life advice. Proverbs 3:5-6 is a favourite ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight’ (NIV). When was the last time, you read the whole book through? There’s advice in there about marriage, raising children

00137 - When I Survey The Wondrous Cross
Written by Isaac Watts in 1707, this song was a departure at the time from the practice of just singing or chanting passages of scripture as worship in a church service. The fourth verse is often omitted as the reference to the globe was often seen beyond anyone’s understanding. The song still sung today has survived 315 years around the world, mainly these days sung in funerals as a poignant reminder of the frailty of life. The song was inspired by Galatians 6:14 ‘May I ne

00136 - Do Something Unexpected Today
Ephesians 3:20 says ‘God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams!’ (MSG). If God can do things unexpected in our lives, perhaps we should occasionally do something unexpected for someone too. God smiles on those who bless others. You might ring a friend and arrange a quick coffee, you might drop by a neighbour and brighten their day, you might take a relative for a quick shopping trip, pay for someone’s grocer

00135 - Lost Your Temper Yet ?
We know inside ourselves what it says in Proverbs 15:1 ‘A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger’ (ESV). Yet on occasion we can’t stop ourselves from causing or participating in an argument. Most of the time when we lose our temper, it’s not the argument at the time which is the cause. There is usually always something behind the something. Frustration at work, receiving bad news, feeling unwell, it all takes its toll, then a flash point comes and whoo

00134 - Stand By Me
During covid the Northwell Health, nurse choir, stand a very moving rendition of ‘stand by me’ on America’s got talent (link below). When you consider the stress health professionals across the world faced during the two turbulent years of the pandemic. 2 Chronicles 15:7 says ‘But as for you, be strong and don’t get discouraged, for your work will be rewarded’. (NET) Covid brought so much depression, to so many people, yet it’s now time to come through the other side. What we

00133 - Great Is Thy Faithfulness
The title is a song written originally as a poem by Thomas Chisholm in 1923. He sent it to William Runyan who was connected to Moody Bible Institute and The Hope Publishing Company. The rest is history as they say. It’s been published in virtually every language and sung consistently around the world since then. 2 Thessalonians 3:3 says ‘But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one’ (ESV). We can of course take comfort in that. Have you
